A concrete pole is shown up close, with a hole in its surface filled with snow. The winter day adds a crisp, cold atmosphere to the scene. The snow inside the hole contrasts with the rough, gray texture of the concrete, highlighting the wear and age of the pole. The close-up perspective emphasizes the details of both the snow and the pole, capturing the contrast between the soft, white snow and the hard, weathered surface of the concrete. The winter setting is further accentuated by the muted light and the subtle chill in the air, creating a serene and somewhat rugged winter scene.

Dotted around a graveyard in Surrey, England, is a series of graves marked by slim, pale gravestones that are lightly bowed at the top. Each of these marks the grave of a combatant in the Second World War (WWII). Besides the details of the deceased person, each gravestone bears the insignia of the division in whose service s/he died. This example shows the gravestone of a soldier in the Queen's Royal Regiment (West Surrey). The insignia shows a sheep carrying a flag of St. George, with the motto PRISTINAE VIRTUTIS MEMOR (Mindful of former valour). The Queen's Royal Regiment (West Surrey) was the senior English line infantry regiment of the British Army, behind only the Royal Scots in the British Army line infantry order of precedence. In 1959, it was amalgamated with The East Surrey Regiment to form a single regiment called The Queen's Royal Surrey Regiment. Today, the regiment continues within the Princess of Wales's Royal Regiment.
