Grasslands occupy one-third of Arizona, taking up some 24 million acres. They provide a unique habitat for wildlife and are part of a large and diverse network of grasslands found throughout the southwestern U.S. and northern Mexico. Semi-desert grasslands found in central and southeastern Arizona reach into Sonora, Mexico and New Mexico. Grasslands in Northern Arizona are similar to those found in the Great Basin and the Colorado Plateau in Colorado, Utah and New Mexico. In the mountainous areas of Northern Arizona, grassland meadows can be found interspersed within the conifer forests. Hart Prairie is a vast grassland located on the northwest side of the San Francisco Peaks. Hart Prairie is in the Coconino National Forest near Flagstaff, Arizona, USA.

Lake Mary is a set of twin lakes located in northern Arizona near the city of Flagstaff. Upper Lake Mary is generally the larger of the two lakes and holds water all year round, while Lower Lake Mary is often dry or only holds water during periods of heavy rainfall or snowmelt. There are dams on both Upper and Lower Lake Mary. The dams impound the water from Walnut Creek which flows downstream from Walnut Canyon.\n \nThe construction of Lower Lake Mary dam began in 1901 and was completed in 1907. The earthen dam was constructed to provide crucial water storage for the growing population of Flagstaff and its surrounding communities. The lower dam is 33 feet high and 650 feet long. The Lower Lake Mary reservoir has a normal storage capacity of 11,029-acre feet.\n\nTo provide additional water storage for the area, the construction of Upper Lake Mary dam and water treatment plant began several decades later, in 1941. The dam was built several miles upstream from Lower Lake Mary to provide additional water storage for the area. In 1951, Upper Lake Mary Dam was raised an additional 10 feet to its current height of 40 feet which increased the normal storage capacity to 16,300 acre-feet.\n\nLake Mary is also a popular destination for bird watchers, hikers, and nature enthusiasts. The area around the lake is home to a wide variety of bird species, including bald eagles, ospreys, and great blue herons. \n\nLake Mary is an essential part of the Northern Arizona community, providing water for local farms, businesses, and residents. The dams also help to prevent flooding in the downstream area during periods of heavy rainfall or snowmelt. Lake Mary is in the Coconino National Forest near Flagstaff, Arizona, USA.

At the end of the Mexican-American War, the United States gained a rugged desert, forest and mountain wilderness in its southwest corner. Eager to explore this untracked area, the federal government sent several expeditions. In 1857 it commissioned retired navy lieutenant Edward Fitzgerald Beale to build the first federally funded interstate road in the southwest. Beale’s road was modest by today’s standards but it provided a serviceable route for 1,240 miles from Fort Smith, Arkansas to the Colorado River. Parts of the historic road are still in existence today. The area in this photograph contains a rough section of Beale’s Road in the Coconino National Forest north of Flagstaff, Arizona, USA.
