Empress Maria Theresia monument at the Maria-Theresien-Platz in Vienna during an overcast spring day.  The Maria Theresia monument is one of the most important monuments of the Habsburg monarchy in Vienna. The statue commemorates Empress Maria Theresa, the ruler of the Habsburg monarchy from 1740 to 1780. The monument stands on the Maria-Theresien-Platz between the Art History Museum and the Natural History Museum since 1888. People in the background are walking on the square and entering the museum.
One central desideratum discussed in the very first assembly of the Association of Austrian Visual Artists Vienna Secession was the erection of a dedicated exhibition building. The members commissioned the architect Joseph Maria Olbrich—an associate in Otto Wagner’s architecture studio, he was barely thirty years old at the time—to design the building, which would become a key work of Viennese Art Nouveau.
