Stafford Castle is an ancient Grade II listed castle situated two miles west of the town of Stafford in Staffordshire, England. \n\nFrom the time of the Norman Conquest and as recorded in the Domesday Book of 1086 it was the seat of the powerful Anglo-Norman Stafford family de Stafford. The 14th-century stone keep was demolished in 1643, during the Civil War, having been held for the Royalists by Lady Isabel Stafford. \n\nThe castle was remodeled in the early 19th century by the Jerningham family in the Gothic Revival style, on the foundations of the medieval structure, and incorporates much of the original stonework. Today the A518 Stafford-to-Newport Road passes next to it and it is a prominent local landmark visible from the M6 motorway and from the West Coast inter-city mainline.

The castle is situated on the Laich of Moray, a fertile plain that was once the swampy foreshore of Spynie Loch. This was originally a more defensive position than it appears today, long after the loch was drained. \n\nThe motte is a huge man-made mound, with steep sides and a wide ditch separating it from the bailey. The whole site is enclosed by a water-filled ditch, which is more a mark of its boundary than it is a serious defensive measure. \nDuffus Castle was built by a Flemish man named Freskin, who came to Scotland in the first half of the 1100s. After an uprising by the ‘men of Moray’ against David I in 1130, the king sent Freskin north as a representative of royal authority.
Magpie Mine is near the village of Sheldon and dates back to 1740. It is famous for fatal running battles it had with other mines over resources which led to a 'widows' curse' on the men of Magpie Mine after they were implicated - but cleared - of the deaths of some of their competitors. When the mine was closed in 1958 it was the last working lead mine in Derbyshire. It is a standing old ruin which is free for the public to view and explore.
