The construction of the  Arc de Triomphe in  Paris was ordered in 1806 by Napoleon, the French Emperor.  Napoleon wanted to honor the Grande Armee, which had conquered most of Europe and was considered invicible.  After his Austerlitz victory in 1805, Napoleon said to his soldiers :  \

This Grade I-listed triumphal arch was designed by Decimus Burton. It stands between Green Park and Hyde Park on Hyde Park Corner. It was built between 1816-1830, although it has been moved from its original location. It was built to commemorate Britain;s victory against Napoleon in the Napoleonic Wars. People can be seen in the background.
