Bryce Canyon National Park is a collection of natural amphitheaters along the eastern side of the Paunsaugunt Plateau. Its rim at varies from 8,000 to 9,000 feet. The Bryce Amphitheater is 12 miles long, 3 miles wide and 800 feet deep. The Paiute Indians believed that the hoodoos (pinnacles) were people whom the gods turned to stone. The area was named after Ebenezer Bryce, who was sent here by the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. He settled in this area in 1874. Canyon de Chelly National Monument in Arizona features spectacular formations of sandstone, which visitors may view from overlooks on the rim of the canyon. The monument sits on land wholly owned by the Navajo Nation. The park is operated by the National Park Service in cooperation with the Navajo, and members of the tribe live in the bottom of the canyon amid flowing streams and cottonwood trees.
