Formerly an important industry in the islands of AAores, the whale hunting was banned in the portuguese waters in the begining of the 80's. Reconverted to more peaceful objectives, this ancient tradition enjoys now an increased popularity in the turistic market of whale spotting. At least once every year, in the former azorean whaling islands, a regatta of traditional whaling boats takes place, giving to the tourists the rare oportunity to see these elegant and beautiful boats in full sails.
