The Verde Valley (Spanish: Valle Verde or Green Valley) is a lush valley in central Arizona and one of a few riparian habitats in the state. The Verde River runs through the valley and is joined by Oak Creek, Beaver Creek and West Clear Creek. The Verde River is one of the state’s remaining free-flowing river systems and provides critical habitat for fish and wildlife. The valley is bounded by the Mogollon Rim to the north and Mingus Mountain to the south. The Verde Valley includes about 714 square miles in the center of Arizona and is about 100 miles north of the Phoenix metropolitan area. The valley is also noted for its many red rock formations. The Granite Dells are a geological feature characterized by exposed granite rock formations that have been sculpted by wind and water over millions of years into unusual shapes and patterns. The term “dells” refers to the valleys or low areas between the granite formations. Nestled among these natural wonders lies Watson Lake, a reservoir formed in 1915 when early settlers dammed Granite Creek. This juxtaposition of geological history and human intervention creates a serene oasis, inviting visitors to ponder the passage of time and marvel at the forces of nature. Watson Lake and the Granite Dells are in Prescott, Arizona, USA.
