Its rim at varies from 8,000 to 9,000 feet. The Bryce Amphitheater is 12 miles long, 3 miles wide and 800 feet deep. The Paiute Indians believed that the hoodoos (pinnacles) were people whom the gods turned to stone. The area was named after Ebenezer Bryce, who was sent here by the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. He settled in this area in 1874. Zion has many beautiful rock formations including this large butte/mesa outcrop. The blue sky accents the rust color of the rock.
They usually have steep, sloping sides and sharp or rounded ridges, and a high point, called a peak or summit. Most geologists classify a mountain as a landform that rises at least 1,000 feet (300 meters) or more above its surrounding area.
