Its rim at varies from 8,000 to 9,000 feet. The Bryce Amphitheater is 12 miles long, 3 miles wide and 800 feet deep. The Paiute Indians believed that the hoodoos (pinnacles) were people whom the gods turned to stone. The area was named after Ebenezer Bryce, who was sent here by the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. He settled in this area in 1874. New Mexico has some of the flattest land as well as some of the most rugged mountains in the country. Some portions of the state are rich in pine forests, meadows, and fish-laden mountain streams, while other areas are devoid of any water bodies, and even cacti struggle to survive.
Zion has many beautiful rock formations including this large butte/mesa outcrop. The blue sky accents the rust color of the rock.
