Thaba Bosiu plateau, Phuthiatsana Valley, Lesotho: grave of King Moshoeshoe I (1786-1870), the first king of Lesotho - also known as Morena e Moholo / morena oa Basotho (Great King / King of the Basotho) - In 1843, Moshoeshoe and the British governor George Thomas Napier signed the Napier Treaty, which confirmed Basotho possession of the western frontier. Moshoeshoe was thus recognized for the first time by the European powers in the region as the leader of the Basotho. Moshoeshoe is considered the wise and honest father of the nation and is still revered in Lesotho today. The area is in the tentative Unesco world heritage list.
