In 1859 a Carrara marble statue representing the Empress Josephine de Beauharnais, wife of the French Emperor Napoleon 1, was installed at La Savane Park in Fort de France. Brisbane City Hall is a grand municipal building with its frontage facing King George Square. It also has side entrances in Ann and Adelaide Streets. Designed in the Italian Renaissance style by architects Hall and Prentice, it was officially opened in 1930. The clock tower is modelled on St Mark's Campanile in Venice while the circular auditorium is built in the same proportions as the Pantheon in Rome. The building is a centre of Brisbane civic life and houses the Museum of Brisbane. It is one of Australia's grandest civic buildings.
