This is a view of a small glacier near Rothera Station, Antarctica. The cliffs catch a wide range of light during the summer months. Original picture is in colour.
A distant view approaching Elephant Island, Antarctica, where Ernest Shackleton’s men had to spend an uncomfortable few months while awaiting rescue after their ill-fated expedition.
Being at water surface level makes the Antarctic views all the more dramatic. In the shadows of the bay, the sun glistens on the distant mountains.  Frigid water surface reflects the clouds of the sky.
Antarctica is a continent capped by an inland ice sheet up to 4.8km thick, containing approximately 90 percent of the world's total surface fresh water and 60 percent of the world's total fresh water. The ice sheet is so heavy that it has pushed the land below sea level in places.
