Shiprock rises over 1500 feet from its base in northwest New Mexico and is considered a sacred peak by the Navajo. The peak is the throat of an extinct volcano. Agathla Peak (7150’), also known as El Capitan, is a prominent geological feature in the American southwest located near Kayenta, Arizona. It is a striking monolithic rock formation that rises abruptly from the surrounding landscape, making it a notable landmark in the region. Agathla Peak is a volcanic neck, which is the core of an ancient volcano. It formed millions of years ago when molten lava solidified within the vent of a volcano. Over time, erosion exposed the hard volcanic rock, creating the distinctive spire-like formation we see today. Characterized by its sheer, almost vertical cliffs that rise to a height of about 1,500 feet above the surrounding terrain, the peak's dark, jagged appearance makes it a striking sight against the backdrop of the Arizona desert.
