Potato farms in the suburbs of Asahikawa and its surrounding landscape, taken from one the lookouts called Shujitsu-no-Oka (Shujitu Hill), not far from Biei Town. \nThe extensive, undulating and colorful patchwork of farms is very attractive landscape of Biei and Asahikawa areas of Hokkaido, which make a sharp difference from flat rice fields in the other islands of Japan’s rural landscape, including that of Hoshu (Main Island). One of the main reasons is the changing of crops (crop rotation) in order to avoid soil sickness. \nThere are many so-called lookouts in the region, which command excellent view of the landscape, such as Shin-ei Hill, San-ai Hill, Hokusei Hill, Shujitu Hill and Road of Patchworks.

Deutzia scabra, commonly called fuzzy deutzia, is an upright, somewhat coarse, deciduous shrub that typically grows 6-10’ tall with spreading to arching branches that form a rounded crown. Spiraea cantoniensis, also called Bridal-wreath Spiraea, Cape May, Double white May, May bush, and Reeve's Spiraea, is a deciduous perennial shrub typically grown as an ornamental plant in gardens. The plant can reach a height of about 2 meters, tends to be twiggy and spreading into a fountain-like form, and displays frothy clusters of white flowers along the terminal of arching branches. The bush blooms in May; hence the common name of May bush.

Exochorda racemosa, commonly called pearlbush or common pearlbush, is a species of the rose family and is mostly found in Japan and China. Common pearlbush is a loose, upright, early-blooming, deciduous shrub, with the flower buds resembling white pearls, hence the common name. Flowers bloom in spring (April-May) just during the cherry blossom season, each flower being 5-petaled, cup-shaped and white.
