Lesser spearwort (Ranunculus flammula) has narrow, spear-shaped leaves that distinguish it from other members of the buttercup family (which have similar flowers but lobed leaves). Lesser spearwort grows in shaded marshy ground, wet shallow ditches and on the edges of ponds. Here, it is the scattering of small yellow flowers at the edge of an artificial pond at Cranmer Green Nature Reserve in Mitcham, Merton, England. The poisonous sap of lesser spearwort has been known to kill grazing animals, and the Latin name (flammula) may refer to the inflammation that can occur if the sap comes into contact with human skin.
Brocchinia reducta is widespread on the plains of the Gran Sabana.
