Pioneers and explorers crossed the Santa Fe Trail, established in 1821 by William Becknell from Franklin, Missouri to Santa Fe, New Mexico. In many instances along the route today one can still see how the geography of the land was changed, with wagon wheel ruts and river crossings. Here, a sign along the Santa Fe Trail National Scenic Byway commemorates one such area in Southeastern Colorado. NOTE: the emblem of the Santa Fe Trail is in the public domain.
