Mount Elden is named for John Elden, one of the region's earliest Anglo settlers. Elden and his family established a homestead on the mountain's lower slopes and, during the late 19th century, grazed sheep on the open grasslands below the mountain. The mountain's exposed, rocky slopes are a dominant feature from almost any part of the surrounding area. Despite its rugged appearance and steep relief, the mountain is accessible via an extensive road and trail system. Mount Elden was photographed from Campbell Meadows in \nFlagstaff, Arizona, USA.
New Mexico has some of the flattest land as well as some of the most rugged mountains in the country. Some portions of the state are rich in pine forests, meadows, and fish-laden mountain streams, while other areas are devoid of any water bodies, and even cacti struggle to survive.

Remains of a remote, hidden ancient ruins - a Sinagua Indian cliff dwelling - viewed from its easiest approach by level ground. The stone wall part way up the hill defines the outside perimeter of the dwelling, within which existed interior stone walls defining various living spaces. Exterior walls were built of loose volcanic rock stacked on top of existing volcanic rock and boulders. There is one main entrance through this front wall, with small adjacent holes in the rock placement through which arrows could be fired if enemies threatened. A secondary access and egress point is availabe to occupants higher up in the dwelling. The far side of the dwelling is a sheer cliff dropping down to a long steep hill down to a dry riverbed. Site selection was critical for the Sinagua, and perfectly executed here. This culture combined hunting and gathering with agriculture, but the latter was challenging in this arrid, wilderness terrain. The exact site location, which requires considerable effort to reach, is intentionally omitted. Its estimated age dates to 1300 AD - 1400 AD. In the late 1960’s and early 1970’s The National Aeronautic and Space Administration (NASA) needed a site to train astronauts for the Apollo Space Program. This site in Northern Arizona was selected for its barren volcanic environment. A series of craters was blasted out with explosives and rocks were brought in to simulate the landing site on the lunar surface. Astronauts were then trained to walk in space suits and use other equipment intended for their lunar missions. Other training sites were built in Texas and Florida but those sites were not preserved and no longer exist. This training site, now on the National Register of Historic Places, is in the Coconino National Forest near Flagstaff, Arizona, USA. The San Francisco Peaks are in the background.
