The Neptune Fountain was designed by the sculptor Francesco Antonio Giongo di Lavarone between 1767 and 1769. Tritons, centaurs, sea horses and cherubs adorn the base of the precious work of art, which on the top boasted a statue of Neptune, all sculpted by Stefano Salterio di Como. The statue of Neptune that we see today is a bronze copy of the sculptor Davide Rigatti, created in 1942 to replace the original threatened by wear of time that was moved in the near courtyard of Palazzo Thun. This vintage lithograph print depicts the portrait of a chief of an Araucanian tribe in Chile, circa 1856. He may be of the fierce Mapuche people, who resisted both Inca and Spanish conquest attempts. He is holding a spear and is wearing traditional tribal dress. Lithograph is a facsimile of the painting by John Mix Stanley (1814 - 1872). Published in the 1856 record of an American expedition to Chile, it is now in the public domain.
