In the town of Göreme in the Cappadocia region of Turkey, in the early days of Christianity, the clergy and believers around them built houses and churches. The life of Jesus Christ is explained by drawing frescoes on the inner walls of the churches.

Karanlk Kilise, or the Dark Church, was a monastic compound built in the 11th century.  It is decorated with scenes from the New Testament:  Christ Pantocrator, Nativity, Adoration of the Magi, First Bath, Last Supper, Betrayal of Judas, Crucifixion, Anastasis.
