Nijo Castle (Nijojo) was built in 1603 to serve as the Kyoto residence for Tokugawa Ieyasu (first shogun of the Edo Period).  Twenty three years later, his grandson completed the castle's palace buildings and further expanded it by adding a five story castle keep.  In 1994, the castle was designated a UNESCO world heritage site.  The photograph that you see here was captured during September of 2007.
