New York City, USA - Mar 13, 1989: The original National Debt Clock, towering over passersby and a hamburger bar on the northwest corner of 6th Avenue and 42nd Street. The clock was the brainchild of Seymour Durst (1913 - 1995), a New York real estate investor and developer, to bring attention to the soaring gross national debt. The clock was installed on 20 February 1989, having been in operation for about three weeks when this photo was taken. It has since been replaced by a new clock, on W 44 Street and 6th Avenue.
