Small pine trees are growing up in the meadow.\n\nThe south of Minas Gerais state has steep growing tourism. The region, known by its stunning scenery, is visited for its nature and culture. \n\nThe region is very rich in minerals and rocks and the landscape is full of mountains, waterfalls, and canyons.\n\nThe vegetation is known as Cerrado, a vast tropical savanna.\n\nThe great amounts of research have proved that the Cerrado is one of the richest of all tropical savanna regions in the world, and has high levels of endemism. Characterized by enormous ranges of plant and animal biodiversity, World Wide Fund for Nature named it the biologically richest savanna in the world, with about 10,000 plant species and 10 endemic bird species. There are nearly 200 species of mammal in the Cerrado, though only 14 are endemic.\n\nThus the region is also much visited by ecotourists.

Over 50,000 years ago, a gigantic meteorite weighing several hundred thousand tons impacted the earth near Flagstaff, Arizona. The force of the impact was a hundred times greater than an atomic bomb, resulting in the huge crater pictured here.
Several flower spikes of the giant, ground-dwelling Blue Puya Bromeliad (Puya berteroniana), called the Chagual in Chile. A close relative of the pineapple this Bromeliad is unusual in growing rooted in earth rather than being an epiphyte on the branches of a tree. It is also very unusual in the Plant Kingdom in having turquoise flowers, which are usually pollinated by hummingbirds when the plant produces its one and only flower spike after about five years of growth and then dies. The species is endemic to Chile.
Nearly a thousand years ago natives inhabited the plains between the Painted Desert and the San Francisco Peaks of Arizona. In an area so dry it would seem impossible to live, they built pueblos, harvested rainwater, grew crops and raised families. Today the remnants of their villages dot the landscape. Wupatki Pueblo is in Wupatki National Monument, established in 1924 to preserve this rich heritage. Wupatki National Monument is near Flagstaff, Arizona, USA.
