A symbolic modern heritage: the greatest flotation plant in the East\n\nThe Kitazawa area in Aikawa is home to a group of facilities, such as a power plant and a thickener (designated National Historical Site), which contributed to the modernization of mines. The flotation method had originally been used for copper beneficiation, but at Kitazawa Flotation Plant, the technniques were applied to silver and gold extraction, and successfully utilized for the first time in the world. Under a war-time increase in production plan, large-scale investment was made. As a result, the Flotation Plant was able to process over 50,000 tonnes of ore per month, and the plant was declared the greatest one in the East.

Near the western shore of Sado Island you will find one of Japan’s most impressive industrial heritage sites - The ruins of the Kitazawa flotation plant. Built during the first half of the 1900s, this was once the biggest producers of ore in East Asia.\nA flotation plant is a site where the final stages of gold mining takes place. More precisely, it’s where the valuable minerals that get extracted from the mine are separated from all the other things that get dug out, such as waste materials and other bi-products. The flotation process requires vast areas of land as well as huge amounts of energy. As the gold mine of Sado used to be the biggest in the entire East Asian region, it shouldn’t come as a surprise that the flotation plant is a huge structure. Several new techniques that led to a more efficient ore extraction process were also pioneered here.

This image offers a close-up perspective of a section of Downhill House, focusing on its stark, unadorned concrete architecture. The composition captures the decaying grandeur of the structure, with cracks and crevices adorning the surface, telling a story of age and exposure to the elements. The angular forms of the architecture and the open windows create a geometric interplay of lines and shapes, which is further emphasized by the strong contrasts of light and shadow. The blue sky visible through the empty window frames provides a vibrant backdrop that contrasts with the weathered grey of the concrete, highlighting the abandonment of the once-stately home. The play of light casts intriguing shadows, adding depth and a sense of the time of day to the image.
