Ajlun, or Ajloun, is a medieval castle built by Saladin and designed to intimidate the Franks. Arab military fortifications were strengthened as the years went by and Saladin worked hard to unite the Muslim forces. An imposing stronghold with moat, drawbridge and towers, Ajlun was built in 1184 but lost much of its military significance after the fall of Karak, the crusader stronghold - However, the castle guarded important trade routes into Syria and never  fell into disuse. Ajlun featured heavily during the wars between the Mongols and the Mamluk empire, Occupied and severely damaged by the Mongol invaders before being reclaimed by the Mameluk Sultan Baibars. Under Ottomans rule Ajlun Castle continued in an administrative role until the 19th century, when it was abandoned after severe damage from earthquake

Hammershus, Northern Europe's largest castle ruin on Bornholm, dates back to the late 13th century. Originally built by Archbishop Jens Grand, it played a key role in Bornholm's history. Notably, King Christian IV's daughter, Leonora Christina, and her husband were imprisoned there in 1660-61. The fortress was abandoned in 1743, and after years of decay, it was protected in 1822, preserving its historical significance.

The ruins of the ancient city of Sillyon, located near Antalya, constitute an important proof that one should not delay visiting the historical monuments. You never know if in a few years they will still exist, undamaged by the passage of time. In the case of Sillyon, the serious damage to ancient buildings was caused by a landslide in 1969. The preserved remains of the city are located on a hill rising to a height of 210 meters above the alluvial plain formed by the river Aksu, in ancient times known as Kestros.
