This is the insignia of The Prince of Wales as displayed on the gravestone of an infantry man from The Welch Regiment. The insignia bears the motto 'Ich dien' – 'I serve'. From 1921 The Welch Regiment was known simply as 'The Welch', using an Old English spelling of 'Welsh', and it drew its soldiers from South and West Wales. It existed as an independent force from 1881 to 1969. In 1969, the 1st Battalion The Welch Regiment amalgamated with The 1st Battalion The South Wales Borderers to form the 1st Battalion The Royal Regiment of Wales 24th/41st. The traditions of both Regiments were handed to the Royal Regiment of Wales.

Sittard War Cemetery is a British military cemetery located in the Dutch town of Sittard. The cemetery contains the graves of 252 World War II victims from Commonwealth countries. Most of the dead were in January and February 1945, with a few in November 1944. Most belonged to the Scottish regiments of the 52nd (Lowland) Division, which was involved in the fighting (under the name of Operation Blackcock) in the area of Sittard, from 18 to 24 January 1945.
