Daphne odora (winter daphne) is a species of flowering plant in the family Thymelaeaceae and is native to China. It is sometimes called Spurge olive, but this name is shared by other plants. It is an evergreen shrub with fragrant, fleshy, pale-pink, tubular flowers. D. odora 'Aureomarginata' has yellow edged leaves, and is hardier and more suitable to cultivation. Aucuba japonica, commonly called Spotted laurel, Japanese laurel, Japanese aucuba and Gold dust, is a dense, upright evergreen shrub, prized for its lush foliage of glossy, rich green leaves mottled with golden yellow. In early to mid spring, small purple flowers, adorned with creamy white anthers, appear from the leaf axils (female plant), or in terminal panicles (male plant). When pollinated, bright, glossy red berries appear from the female flowers that ripen in autumn and often persist until spring.
