01 november 2023, Yutz Cité, Yutz, Thionville Portes de France, Moselle, Lorraine, Grand Est, France. It's fall. Close-up of a Pleurotus dryinus. It is a parasitic fungus that grows on the trunk of a live oak tree. Solitary, it is a young mushroom with a cap that is still underdeveloped, of medium size, and still almost immaculate white.
Pleurotus ostreatus (Jacq. ex Fr.) Kummer. Oyster Mushroom, Pleurote en forme d'huître, Oreillette, Mouret, Poule de bois, Austernseitling, Austernpilz, Késõi laskagomba, Gelone, orgella, agarico ostreato, pinnella, Oesterzwam. Cap 6–14cm across, shell-shaped, convex at first then flattening or slightly depressed and often wavy and lobed at the margin or splitting, variable in colour; flesh-brown or deep blue-grey later more grey-brown. Stem 20–30´10–20cm, excentric to lateral, or absent, white with a woolly base. Flesh white. Taste and smell pleasant. Gills decurrent, white at first then with a yellowish tinge. Spore print lilac. Spores subcylindric, 7.5–11 x 3–4um. Habitat often in large clusters on stumps and fallen or standing trunks, usually of deciduous trees, especially beech. Season all year. Common. Edible and good. Distribution, America and Europe (source R. Phillips).

This is a favourite amongst edible fungi that is often found growing on beech trees. This fine display is actually growing from a horse chestnut tree (Aesculus hippocastanum). Oyster mushrooms can be grown in bags or on logs, and are best eaten when young.
