There are many identifiable names visible on this monument which was erected by the Association of Minor Asia and the Association of Minor Asia 'Ionia' Rethymnon. The genocide took place after The Young Turk Revolution involving the years 1914-1923 which impacted the Christian minority Pontic Greeks in Anatolia. The Young Turks wanted to 'Turkify' the Ottoman Empire and so a genocidal campaign took place against non-Turkish minorities. Between 1914-1923, about 353,000 Pontic Greeks were killed and 1.5 million were expelled.

The original artwork is a colour lithograph based on a sketch by Louis Delaporte, appearing in the Album Pittoresque, Paris, 1873. Delaporte was the artist on a French expedition exploring the course of the Mekong in the 1860s.
