An idyllic skyline of the medieval heart of Viterbo, in central Italy, with the bell tower of the Cathedral of San Lorenzo (Saint Lawrence) and a glimpse of the village of San Pellegrino. The historic center of Viterbo, the largest in Europe with countless historic buildings, churches and villages, stands on the route of the ancient Via Francigena (French Route) which in medieval times connected the regions of France to Rome, up to the commercial ports of Puglia, in southern Italy, to reach the Holy Land through the Mediterranean. Located about 100 kilometers north of Rome, in the Lazio region, Viterbo is also known as the City of Popes because in the 13th century it was the seat of papal power for 24 years. Founded by the Etruscan civilization and recognized as a city in the year 852, Viterbo is characterized by its peperino stone and tuff constructions, materials abundantly present in this region of central Italy.
