Metastatic neuroendocrine tumor. Site: Liver. Neuroendocrine tumors are cancers that begin in specialized cells called neuroendocrine cells. Neuroendocrine cells have traits similar to those of nerve cells and hormone-producing cells. Neuroendocrine tumors are rare and can occur anywhere in the body.

Cryptococcus neoformans fungus, computer illustration. C. neoformans is a yeast-like fungus that reproduces by budding. An acidic mucopolysaccharide capsule completely encloses the fungus. It can cause the disease cryptococcosis, especially in immune deficient patients, such as those with HIV/AIDS (acquired immunodeficiency syndrome). It can infect the brain, causing meningitis or brain abscesses, lungs or skin. The most common clinical form is meningoencephalitis. It is caused by inhaling the fungus from soil that has been contaminated by pigeon droppings.

Hepatic steatosis is a disorder characterized by the accumulation of fat inside the liver cells. 3D illustration
Cirrhosis is a complication of liver disease which involves loss of liver cells and irreversible scarring of the liver. Typically, the disease comes on slowly over months or years. Early on, there are often no symptoms. As the disease worsens, a person may become tired, weak, itchy, have swelling in the lower legs, develop yellow skin, bruise easily, have fluid build up in the abdomen, or develop spider-like blood vessels on the skin. Cirrhosis is most commonly caused by alcohol, hepatitis B, hepatitis C, and non-alcoholic fatty liver disease. Non-alcoholic fatty liver disease is due to a number of reasons, including being overweight, diabetes, high blood fats, and high blood pressure. Cirrhosis is characterized by the replacement of normal liver tissue by scar tissue. These changes lead to loss of liver function. Diagnosis is based on blood testing, medical imaging, and liver biopsy. Image illustrates hepatic steatosis and chronic hepatitis. Trichrome stain
Hepatitis C viral infection on the stage of liver cirrhosis. Computer illustration showing cirrhotic liver and close-up view of hepatitis C viruses. Hepatitis C viruses are the common cause of chronic hepatitis which progresses to liver cirrhosis. Viruses cause cell death (necrosis) throughout whole areas of the liver called hepatic lobules. This forms large scars and the liver surface here appears rough and lumpy instead of a smooth healthy appearance. The disease is irreversible and may lead to liver carcinoma.

Nephroblastoma (Wilms tumor), blastema-predominant. Wilm's tumor, also known as nephroblastoma, is the most common cancer of the kidneys in children. Wilms' tumor most often affects children ages 3 to 4 and becomes much less common after age 5.
