The maquis, or macchia, is a type of dense, evergreen shrubland found primarily in the Mediterranean region. This vegetation is characterized by hardy shrubs and small trees such as holm oak, rosemary, and juniper, which thrive in the hot, dry summers and mild, wet winters typical of Mediterranean climates. The maquis habitat is well adapted to fire, with many plants having thick bark and deep root systems to survive and regenerate after wildfires. It provides a unique and rich ecosystem for a variety of wildlife.

Two specimens of the endemic Cruckshanksia montiana (which has no English or local Spanish name) growing in coastal sand-dunes in the southern Atacama Desert region of Chile. Confined to Chile, this species can exist with very little water although, in years when the desert receives rain, Cruckshanksia will comprise some of the ‘flowering desert’ flora that happens particularly when there is an El Niño warming of the nearshore Pacific Ocean. This species has vivid yellow flowers surrounded by larger, equally yellow sepals, presumably to attract pollinators, while the regular green leaves grow close to the sand.

The Whetstone Mountains located in Cochise County, southeastern Arizona, are a part of the Coronado National Forest. The mountains are steep and rugged, with Apache Peak being its highest point. The foothills are covered in dense scrub, grasses, cacti, succulents, while low woody trees can be found at the higher elevations. The rising sun casts shadows across portions of the desert floor and mountain range under a magnificent blue sky. Panoramic image.
