Pointe-à-Pitre, Guadeloupe: 3 brown pelicans (Pelecanus occidentalis occidentalis) - Brown pelicans are excellent swimmers, but their gait on land appears clumsy. Their long wings make brown pelicans extremely durable and graceful fliers, and groups of brown pelicans are often seen flying in formations just above the surface of the water. It is a common resident in the southern Bahamas, the Greater Antilles, and locally in the northern Lesser Antilles, east of Montserrat. Uncommon to rare across the rest of the Antilles, with a few birds roaming between the islands. Migrants nesting in North America increase numbers locally mainly from November to February. The brown pelican is the official state bird of the US state of Louisiana and is depicted in the seal of Louisiana feeding three chicks.
