Churning Caldron, located in Yellowstone National Park's Mud Volcano area, is a turbulent hot spring known for its intense boiling and churning waters. The acidity and high temperatures of the water, reaching up to 170°F (77°C), create a muddy, frothy appearance. The area around Churning Caldron is rich in sulfur, giving it a distinctive rotten egg smell. This geothermal feature was significantly altered following the 1978 earthquake, which increased its activity and led to the formation of new hot springs and fumaroles in the vicinity.
