Plum blossom season starts in late January and lasts until March in Japan. In spite of severe cold climate, plum flowers are brave enough to start decorating bare branches of plum trees in our parks and gardens with red, pink and white blossoms, hinting to us that spring is around the corner, which is very encouraging to us Japanese who have endured cold winter with few flowers to please our eyes. They start blooming in cold weather, prior to the cherry blossom season.

Branch full of cherry blossoms in Springtime. A cherry blossom, also known as Japanese cherry or sakura, is a flower of many trees of genus Prunus or Prunus subg. Cerasus. They are common species in East Asia, including China, Korea and especially in Japan. They generally refer to ornamental cherry trees, not to be confused with cherry trees that produce fruit for eating. It is considered the national flower of Japan. Wild species of the cherry tree is widely distributed mainly in the Northern hemisphere.
