The margins of Cathedral City are only partially developed, as a result, the locale is still home to many indigenous species. One such constituent is a butterfly known to Entomology (the study of insects) as Vanessa Cardui, and commonly as the Painted Lady. Their beautiful wing patterns can be visualized here as they flit to and from flowering plants, feeding on nectar and spreading pollen. They are blessed with abundance this Spring, due to an especially wet Winter. This caused numerous native plants to thrive, and the insects happily obliged. Long may the area remain a habitat for Pre Contact ecology.

This Mormon metalmark female butterfly subspecies is near extinction. Only found in one small strip of sandy terrain in the California Antioch Dunes. The only host plant is Naked Stemmed Buckwheat, also an endangered species. The area is now a NWF refuge closed to the public for conservation.
