Lone Star Geyser, Yellowstone National Park
South Scalloped Spring is known for its beautifully scalloped edges and clear, blue water. This hot spring's distinctive scalloped formations are created by mineral deposits, which build up around the edge of the spring over time.

The Great Plains meet the Rocky Mountains in Wyoming. The state is a great plateau broken by a number of important mountain ranges. In the northwest are the Absaroka, the Owl Creek, Wyoming, Gros Ventre, Wind River and the Teton ranges. In the north central are the Big Horns; in the northeast, the Black Hills; and in the southern portion of Wyoming, the Laramie, Medicine Bow and Sierra Madre ranges.
This geyser consists of a cluster of small vents that produce frequent but irregular bursts of water, often reaching heights of up to 15 feet. The name 'Spasmodic' reflects its jerky, spasm-like activity, where multiple vents can erupt simultaneously or in rapid succession. Spasmodic Geyser is part of the extensive network of geothermal features in the Upper Geyser Basin, offering a unique display of Yellowstone's dynamic and varied geyser activity.
Perhaps the most unusually shaped geyser in Yellowstone National Park is Grotto Geyser, named for its resemblance to grottoes (or caves). Located in the Upper Geyser Basin, Grotto Geyser is seen daily by thousands of visitors to Yellowstone.

Not far from Old Faithful, Grotto Geyser is located in the Upper Geyser Basin of Yellowstone National Park, Wyoming.
Vibrant geyser
In 1872, Yellowstone became the first national park for all to enjoy the unique hydrothermal and geologic features. Within Yellowstone National Park visitors have opportunities to observe wildlife in an intact ecosystem, explore geothermal areas that contain about half the world’s active geysers, and view geologic wonders.
Grotto Geyser at Upper Geyser Basin, Yellowstone National Park, Wyoming, USA
Yellowstone National Park’s thermal features can be seen as the product of millions of years of geology at work. Geysers are hot springs that erupt periodically. The eruptions is the result of super-heated water below-ground becoming trapped in channels leading to the surface.
Grotto Geyser is known for its unique, irregularly shaped cone, which resembles a series of interlocked arches or grottoes. Eruptions from Grotto Geyser are frequent, often lasting several hours, with water reaching heights of 10 to 40 feet. The geyser's unusual cone formation is believed to have been created by mineral deposits building up around the remnants of dead trees and other debris, making it one of the most distinctive features in the basin. Grotto Geyser is part of the Giant Group, contributing to the diverse geothermal landscape of Yellowstone.

Porkchop Geyser's name derives from its pork chop-shaped sinter mound. Measuring around 2 feet in diameter, the geyser was once a tranquil hot spring until 1971 when it began erupting intermittently. In 1989, it experienced a violent hydrothermal explosion, scattering debris over 200 feet away and significantly altering its appearance. In that year, a visitor named David Kirwan died after attempting to rescue his friend's dog from the hot spring.
