Nijo Castle (Nijojo) was built in 1603 to serve as the Kyoto residence for Tokugawa Ieyasu (first shogun of the Edo Period).  Twenty three years later, his grandson completed the castle's palace buildings and further expanded it by adding a five story castle keep.  In 1994, the castle was designated a UNESCO world heritage site.  The photograph that you see here was captured during September of 2007.

Here in this photograph (captured in September of 2007) you have a group of tourists exploring the compounds of Nijo Castle.  In 1994, this cultural and historic landmark was designated a UNESCO world heritage site.
