The Salzburg Protestants were about 20,000 faith refugees from the catholic Archdiocese Salzburg, who had to leave their home because of an expulsion decree from 1731. Vintage engraving showing a scene from the Crimean War 1853 to 1856, a conflict in which Russia lost to an alliance of France, Britain, the Ottoman Empire, and Sardinia. Battle of the Chernaya fought during the Crimean War on August 16, 1855. The battle was fought between Russian troops and a coalition of French, Sardinian and Ottoman troops. The Chernaya River is on the outskirts of Sevastopol. The battle ended in a Russian retreat and a victory for the French.
