José Tomás de Sousa Martins (Vila Franca de Xira, Alhandra, March 7, 1843 — Vila Franca de Xira, Alhandra, August 18, 1897) was a physician and professor at the Medical-Surgical School of Lisbon, predecessor of the Faculties of Medicine of Lisbon, the Faculty of Medicine of the University of Lisbon and the Faculty of Medical Sciences of UNL - Universidade Nova de Lisboa. Graduated in Pharmacy and Medicine, he worked intensely and, in most cases, for free, especially in the fight against tuberculosis. A brilliant orator, gifted with humor and intelligence, a man of inexhaustible activity and a tireless practitioner of charity for the most disadvantaged, he exerted a strong influence on professional colleagues, students and the patients he treated. This influence metamorphosed and continued over time, with the figure of Sousa Martins assuming the contours of a secular saint, in a current cult, clearly visible in the ex-vows placed around his statue in Campo dos Mártires da Pátria, in Lisbon, in front of the headquarters of the current Faculty of Medical Sciences of Universidade Nova de Lisboa, and in the cemetery of Alhandra, where he is buried. He was a corresponding member of the Royal Academy of Sciences in Lisbon.
