The stunning maze of alleys, stairs and stone houses in the old town of Matera, in southern Italy, known worldwide as the 'Sassi di Matera' (Matera's Stones). The ancient city of Matera, in the region of Basilicata, is one of the oldest urban settlements in the world, with a human presence that dates back to more than 9,000 years ago, in the Paleolithic period. The Matera settlement stands on two rocky limestone hills called 'Sassi' (Sasso Caveoso and Sasso Barisano), where the first human communities lived in the caves of the area. The rock cavities have served over the centuries as a primitive dwelling, foundations and material for the construction of houses, roads and beautiful churches, making Matera a unique city in the world. In 1993 the Sassi of Matera were declared a World Heritage Site by Unesco. Wide angle image in High Definition format.

The Marble Church, Copenhagen, Denmark - November 12, 2022: The Marble Church, also known as Frederik's Church, is an Evangelical Lutheran church in Copenhagen, Denmark. Frederick's Church has the largest church dome in Scandinavia with a span of 31m. The dome rests on 12 columns. The inspiration was probably St. Peter's Basilica in Rome. The church was designed by architect Nicolai Eigtved in 1740 \n\nThe foundation stone was set by king Frederick V on October 31, 1749, but the construction was slowed by budget cuts and the death of Nicolai Eigtved in 1754. In 1770, the original plans for the church were abandoned by Johann Friedrich Struensee. The church was left incomplete and, in spite of several initiatives to complete it, stood as a ruin for nearly 150 years.\n\nIn 1874, Andreas Frederik Krieger, Denmark's Finance Minister at the time, sold the ruins of the uncompleted church and the church square to Carl Frederik Tietgen for 100,000 Rigsdaler — none of which was to be paid in cash — on the condition that Tietgen would build a church in a style similar to the original plans and donate it to the state when complete, while in turn he acquired the rights to subdivide neighboring plots for development.
