Low to short, tufted, rather rough-hairy perennial. Basal leaves in a rosett, oblong-lanceolate, the lowermost stalked; stem leaves oval to linear, unstalked. Flowers bright to deep blue, relative large, 6-9mm, in rather short cymes, fragrant; calyx silvery hairy, with some hooked hairs below, the teeth erect or spreading in fruit. Nuts black.

Nigella damascena, also known as Love-in-a-mist and Devil in the bush, is an annual garden flowering plant, which belongs to the buttercup family Ranunculaceae. Native to southern Europe, north Africa and south-west Asia, it is found on neglected, damp patches of land. Its common name “Love-in-a-mist” comes from the flowers being nestled in a ring of multifid, lacy bracts. The flowers, blooming in early summer, are most commonly different shades of blue, but can be white, pink or pale purple, with 5 to 25 petals.

Flowering throughout the year.\nDistribution: Naturalized through Europe, since early in the nineteenth century.\n\nThis is a common Species on the described Habitat and other Rural Places in the Netherlands.
