The Mourning Dove (Zenaida macroura) is one of the most widely distributed and abundant of all the birds of North America. It is also a prolific breeder. One pair can raise up to six broods of two chicks each in a single year. The bird is a strong flier with the wings making an unusual whistling sound. Mourning doves are a muted light grey and brown. The males and females look alike and are generally monogamous. Their diet consists almost exclusively of seeds. This mourning dove was photographed perched on a branch at Las Cruces, New Mexico, USA.
