Midwinter flower buds and foliage of the Australian Aromo Tree, sometimes called the Silver Wattle, (Acacia dealbata). There are at least six different species of Acacia Tree called “Aromo” in Chile, with ‘dealbata’ being an import from Australia some time in the last two hundred years. They bloom very early in spring and are used as cattle forage (leaves and seeds), wood (for charcoal) and as a favourite source of nectar among bee-keepers.

Acacia baileyana, also called Cootamundra waffle, is a large evergreen shrub or small tree, adorned with a wide-spreading canopy and weeping branches, clothed in feathery, finely cut, blue-gray leaves. The foliage remains appealing all year round. In late winter to early spring, clouds of bright golden-yellow, small, rounded flowers held in axillary racemes cover the branches and create a striking floral display. As some photos show, it is a great plant for slopes and banks.\nThese photos were taken on a very windy day in spring.

A Wattle Bloom in Soft Focus. This is a Black wattle (A. mearnsii). The Acacia melanoxylon is the most widely introduced and planted Acacia species in New Zealand.
