The people of Israel were worshiping the Canaanite idols. The Lord allowed the Midianites to conquer and rule over the Israelites as punishment. The Midianites destroyed the land and the crops each year before they were harvested. The Israelites were helpless. Finally, after seven years they called out to God for help. The angel of the Lord spoke to Gideon, calling on him to rescue the Israelites. That very night Gideon and his men destroyed the idols and built a new altar to the Lord. When the Israelites woke the next morning, they were furious. They wanted to kill Gideon, but did not. A message arrived saying that the Midianites and Amalekites had crossed the Jordan River into the Jezreel Valley. Gideon called on the Israelites to come and fight. God gave very detailed instructions about how Gideon would defeat the enemy. Gideon obeyed God and was victorious. The men who had helped him carry out God’s plan were punished. Israel lived forty years in peace, but once again returned to idol worship after Gideon’s death.

Nehemiah was one of the Jewish exiles working as an important official for the king of Persia. When Nehemiah found out from his brother how desperate conditions were in Jerusalem, he asked the king to allow him to go to Jerusalem and to oversee the rebuilding of the city walls. Permission was granted and he went to Jerusalem. He met with the Jews, explained the plan and along with the help of the Jewish people, rebuilding began. When word of the project spread, enemies came to taunt Nehemiah and even threatened to attack. Half of the Jews worked on the rebuild and half protected them from attack. Eventually the project was complete, the walls of Jerusalem had been rebuilt.

The Israelites were living in captivity in Egypt. They were persecuted and abused. Pharaoh ordered that all Hebrew newborn boys be killed. Moses was born during this time. His mother hid him in a basket and Pharaoh’s daughter found him and raised him in the palace. God spoke to Moses through a burning bush and instructed him to lead the Israelites out of Egypt to Canaan, the “Promised Land.” It took a long time to get Pharaoh to allow the Israelites to leave. Before leaving, the first Passover was observed. God told Moses that He would pass through Egypt and that every Egyptian boy would die. All Israelites were to place the blood of a lamb on the door so their houses would be passed over and the boys would live. After that Pharaoh allowed them to go. Moses was the leader on the journey and along the way he performed miracles like parting the Red Sea, turning his staff to a serpent, and turning the river water to blood. He was given the Ten Commandments. The Israelites were guided by God in the form of a pillar of cloud by day and a pillar of fire by night. The journey was long, filled with good days, trials, and grumbling. Eventually, after 40 years in the wilderness, they made it. Moses saw the promised land and then died. He never actually made it there.

Joseph, son of Jacob, had eleven brothers. The brothers resented him for being Jacob’s favorite. Jacob had given Joseph a coat of many colors. That angered the brothers. Joseph had two dreams. In each he was lifted high above the brothers. That made them angry. They sold him into slavery and told their father he was dead. Joseph ended up in the house of Potiphar. He was successful and honored in that house until Potiphar’s wife tried to persuade him to have an inappropriate relationship. He refused and she falsely accused him. Joseph landed in jail. He was there until Pharaoh had a dream and needed someone to interpret it. He called for Joseph. Joseph told him famine was coming to Egypt and what needed to be done to prepare. Again Joseph gained success and prominence in Egypt. His brothers came to buy grain. Joseph told them to return and bring back the youngest brother. He demanded one brother stay behind. He tested his brothers by hiding money in their grain bags. They returned the money. They did as instructed, brought back Benjamin. Again Joseph tested his brothers by hiding a goblet in Benjamin’s bag. When found, he insisted Benjamin stay behind. The brothers begged for mercy for their father’s sake. Joseph knew they had changed. He revealed his identity and was reunited with his brothers and father, Jacob.
