Caltagirone, Italy - March 28, 2018: The railway station replaced an abandoned station at the end of the seventies. The first station of Caltagirone, abandoned in 1979, was built on 31 October 1892. The continuation of the railway from Caltagirone to Gela, approved in 1911, was carried out with extreme slowness and the opening of the line to traffic only took place in November 1979. The new station was built near to the square into which some important and busy arteries of the city converge. A few months before the opening of the new line to Gela, the station was activated in its infrastructures and the operation of the trains transferred to the new, larger and more modern systems through a new section, in variant, of the railway coming from Catania. The old station was abandoned.
