A suggestive view of the imposing archaeological area of the Theatre of Marcellus, located between the roman Jewish Ghetto (right) and the Capitoline hill or Campidoglio (Roman Capitol), in the historic core of Ancient Rome. Built in the southern area of the ancient Campus Martius, the Theatre of Marcellus it was completed in 13 BC and formally inaugurated in 12 BC from the Emperor Augustus, taking its name from his nephew Marcus Claudius Marcellus who died in 23 BC. The remaining columns (center) refer to the Temple of Apollo Sosianus, built starting from 413 BC and subsequently expanded during the Dynasty of the Augustus emperor. In the background the baroque church of the Santissimo Nome di Maria al Foro and the Trajan Column, while in the foreground the remains of the majestic colonnade of the Basilica Ulpia, built in honor of the Emperor Trajan's family. The Roman Forum, one of the largest archaeological areas in the world, represented the political, legal, religious and economic center of the city of Rome, as well as the nerve center of the entire Roman civilization. A suggestive view over the roofs and terraces of Rome from the top of the Roman Pantheon, in the Rione Pigna (Pigna District), in the historic heart of the Eternal City. To the left, in the Piazza della Rotonda, or Piazza del Pantheon, the Baroque fountain and Egyptian obelisk designed in 1575 by Giacomo della Porta. Built in 27 BC by the Consul Marco Vispanio Agrippa for the emperor Augustus and dedicated to all the Roman divinities, the majestic Pantheon is one of the best preserved Roman structures in the world. Currently owned by the Italian state, this Roman temple preserves the remains of some Italian royalty and the Renaissance painter Raphael.
