Lisbon, Portugal: Ram Air Turbine (RAT)  is a small propellor that will deploy in a serious emergency to supply emergency backup electrical power to the aircraft. Usually this happens after all main engines and the APU (auxiliary power unit) fail. Behind the two-blade propeller a hydraulic pump can be seen, besides power, the RAT provides emergency hydraulic pressure. The RAT generates power from the airstream by ram pressure due to the speed of the aircraft. It may be also called an air driven generator (ADG) -
