Forcepsfish Forcipiger flavissimus occurs in the tropical Indo-Pacific Ocean from East Africa and Red Sea to the Hawaiian and Easter islands, north to southern Japan, south to Lord Howe Island, throughout Micronesia, in the Eastern Pacific from southern Baja California and Mexico to the Revillagigedo and Galapagos Islands in a depth range from 0 to 145m, max. length 22cm. The species is common in exposed seaward reefs but also found in lagoon reefs and occurs solitary or in small groups of up to 5 individuals. Adults are usually in pairs with distinct pairing during breeding. Forcipiger flavissimus feeds on a wide variety of animal prey including hydroids, fish eggs, small crustaceans, but prefers tube feet of echinoderms, pedicilaria of sea urchins, and polychaete tentacles. The species is not anymore called Longnose Butterfly, because the name is used for Forcipiger longirostris. The two species are often confused, although they differ significantly in body proportions. The easiest confirmed diagnostic trait at least for adults is the eye coloration difference: the lower half of the eye of Forcipiger flavissimus is pale, whitish.
