A view of the rear of a modern battle tank; it's possible to see the engine bay and the more vulnerable parts of the tank such as the fuel tanks. To save on weight tanks often had their weakest armour at the rear, as that part should never be exposed to the enemy, however during situations such as urban combat or ambushes, it's these weakspots that were often targeted by the enemy.\n\nModern tanks have developed to an unimaginable degree from their first inception in 1916, however the premise remains the same: An armoured cabin to protect the crew, all-terain caterpillar tracks to help navigate unforgiving terrain, and intimidating firepower to overcome the enemy.

A close up photo of the assortment of tools and equipment which are stored on the side of armoured tanks. \n\nThe box may contain tools or servicing materials for the tank, there are mounting hooks and blocks which often carry spare track links for repairs in the field, and more modern machines often have mounting points for Reactive Armour. The steel cable can be used for towing vehicles, or for pulling wreckage and blockages from the vehicle's path. A tank needs to carry all the things it might need in the field with it at all times, but as the inner compartment is often cramped or filled with combat necessary materials, everything else is usually stored externally.\n\nModern tanks have developed to an unimaginable degree from their first inception in 1916, however the premise remains the same: An armoured cabin to protect the crew, all-terain caterpillar tracks to help navigate unforgiving terrain, and intimidating firepower to overcome the enemy.

Side of a main battle tank protected using explosive reactive armour (ERA). Reactive armor is a technology that attempts to protect armored vehicles against anti-tank weapons using a counter-explosion. The reactive armor is placed on top of the passive steel or composite armor in the form of tiles / bricks. It consists of a layer of explosive, which is in turn covered with a metal plate. If a projectile hits the reactive armor, the explosive layer explodes and throws the metal plate towards the projectile. Originally developed by Israel and the Soviet Union.
